the journal of the
equidistant past

there is only one shelf
on the bookshelf
but I know it to be the
top one, the one
reserved for the hardcovered
antique, the classic with
yellow pages and a dust-
faulty binding,
through which characters
and plots leap and blur
between the bookends of
first memories and
last week.
