Doublets

Change one capitalized word into another by changing one letter at a time, such that each intermediate step is a legitimate English word. You may, at any step, anagram the letters of the word; but you may not do both in one step.  The fewest steps wins!

One could link IRON and CORD in the following four steps:

IRON -- ICON -- COIN -- CORN -- CORD.

A recent Doublets Puzzle challenged the Wordly-Wise to

Make the SMALL -- LARGE.

Here are some sample entries:

9 Step solutions

SMALL - malls - males - lames - games - mages - rages - rager - lager - LARGE
<Jeffery Donovan - 9 steps, 4 anagrams>

SMALL - malls - males - rales - rages - raged -grade - glade - glare - LARGE
<Steve & Janet Montgomery - 9 steps, 3 anagrams>

7 Step solutions.

SMALL - malls - galls - gales - rales - laser - lager - LARGE
<Steve Chrisomalis - 7 steps, 3 anagrams)

SMALL - malls - walls - wales - wages - wager - lager - LARGE
<Jeffrey Siegel - 7 steps, 2 anagrams>

As a purer solution (fewer anagrams), Jeffrey's solution would be deemed the winner.
